When designing an outdoor timber deck, most homeowners focus on selecting top-tier decking planks like Belian, Chengal, or Merbau. Yet the true lifespan of an outdoor deck is also affected by the hidden engineering beneath the surface: the sub-frame joist system. However, using timber beneath timber requires strict attention to wood grading, elevation, and moisture mitigation. If lower-grade, sapwood-heavy timber is mistakenly installed underneath, it becomes an easy target for subterranean termites and moisture-induced fungal rot.
Structural architectural aluminum joists have become the modern standard recommended by timber specialists, particularly for low-clearance terraces, rooftop gardens, and swimming pool perimeters. The defining advantage of aluminum is complete immunity to biological decay. Aluminum does not absorb moisture, swell during monsoon seasons, or rot, making it entirely impervious to termite attacks. For ground-level garden decks where sub-deck clearance is minimal, aluminum thrives where timber joists struggle against trapped ground moisture.

Selecting the right substructure ultimately depends on your site conditions, ground clearance, and long-term maintenance goals. Hardwood joists remain a viable, traditional choice for elevated, high-clearance decks and multi-level platforms with generous natural cross-ventilation, provided the timber is strictly heavy heartwood. For low-height garden patios, pool surrounds with constant water splash, high-rise balconies, and luxury residences where zero-maintenance peace of mind is essential, aluminum sub-frames represent the premier, future-proof engineering standard.
